John 5:39
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to the Jews who were challenging His authority. He points out that they diligently study the Scriptures, believing that they contain the key to eternal life. However, Jesus tells them that the true purpose of the Scriptures is to testify about Him.
The Importance of Searching the Scriptures:Jesus instructs the Jews to “search the scriptures.” This indicates the importance of studying God’s Word. The Scriptures are a valuable source of knowledge and understanding of God’s nature, His will for humanity, and His plan of salvation.
The Purpose of Scriptures:Jesus reveals that the Scriptures testify about Him. The Old Testament, which the Jews were familiar with, contains numerous prophecies, types, and symbols that point to the coming of the Messiah. Jesus is the fulfillment of these prophecies and the embodiment of God’s plan for salvation.
The Quest for Eternal Life:The Jews believed that by diligently studying the Scriptures, they could find eternal life. However, Jesus corrects this misconception by emphasizing that true eternal life is found in Him. The purpose of the Scriptures is not just intellectual knowledge but to lead people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the source of eternal life.
Jesus as the Center of Scripture:The verse highlights that the central message of the Scriptures is about Jesus. The Old Testament foreshadows His coming, and the New Testament reveals His life, teachings, death, and resurrection. Therefore, when studying the Scriptures, it is crucial to see how every passage ultimately points to Jesus.
Application for Believers:This verse reminds us of the importance of searching the Scriptures and understanding their purpose. As Christians, we should study the Bible with the intention of finding Jesus in its pages. By doing so, we can grow in our relationship with Him, deepen our understanding of God’s plan of salvation, and receive the gift of eternal life through faith in Christ.
In conclusion, John 5:39 highlights the importance of searching the Scriptures with the understanding that they testify about Jesus. It reminds us that true eternal life is found in Him, and the purpose of studying the Bible is to deepen our relationship with Christ and understand God’s plan of salvation.
