John 5:47

But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Context

Jesus spoke these words to Jewish religious leaders who challenged His authority after He healed a man on the Sabbath. In John 5, He defends His identity and works, explaining His relationship with the Father and His authority as the Son of God. He reminds them that the Hebrew Scriptures testify of Him, saying, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).

Jesus then identifies Moses as their accuser, for they placed their hope in Moses yet failed to recognize Him. He declares, “For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me: for he wrote concerning me” (John 5:46). The writings of Moses—the Pentateuch—contain prophecies and foreshadowings of the coming Messiah, which Jesus fulfills.

Meaning

In verse 47, Jesus presses the inconsistency of the religious leaders. They professed to believe Moses’ writings, yet those very writings pointed to Jesus. If they would not credit the written testimony they claimed to accept, how could they be expected to believe His spoken words? Their unbelief was not a lack of evidence but a matter of the heart.

Jesus is not arguing that Moses is greater than Himself. Rather, He uses the Jews’ own reverence for Moses to expose their unbelief. By rejecting the writings of Moses, they were essentially rejecting Jesus Himself.

Biblical connections

This passage highlights the unity of Scripture and the person of Christ. The Old Testament writings find their fulfillment in Him. Both testaments together reveal God’s comprehensive plan for humanity’s redemption, with Jesus as the central figure.
