John 5:6
“When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?”
Context:In this passage, Jesus encounters a man who had been invalid for 38 years and was lying by the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. The pool was believed to have healing properties, and people with various afflictions gathered there, hoping to be healed when the waters were stirred by an angel.
Observation:Jesus sees the man lying there and perceives that he had been in that condition for a long time. Despite the man’s longstanding condition, Jesus poses a question to him, asking if he desires to be made whole or if he wants to be healed.
Meaning and Application:
- Compassion of Jesus:Jesus demonstrates His compassion and concern for the man’s situation by acknowledging his condition and initiating the conversation. This shows us that Jesus cares about our sufferings and is attentive to our needs.
- Spiritual Healing:The passage goes beyond physical healing, pointing to a deeper spiritual truth. The man’s physical condition serves as a metaphor for the spiritual condition of humanity. Just as the man was unable to heal himself, we are incapable of saving ourselves from the consequences of sin. Jesus, the source of healing and salvation, approaches us and offers us the opportunity to be made whole.
- The Willingness to Be Made Whole:Jesus’ question challenges the man’s willingness to be healed. It suggests that the man might have grown accustomed to his condition or lacked the faith to believe in the possibility of healing. Similarly, Jesus asks us if we are willing to be made whole, inviting us to examine our hearts and desires. It requires an active response on our part to accept and receive the healing and transformation Jesus offers.
- Faith and Obedience:In the subsequent verses (John 5:7-9), the man responds by expressing his desire to be healed. Jesus then commands him to rise, take up his bed, and walk. The man obeys Jesus’ instruction, demonstrating faith in His words. This teaches us that faith and obedience play a vital role in experiencing the healing and transformative power of Jesus in our lives.
- Overall Message:John 5:6 highlights Jesus’ compassion, His ability to see beyond physical ailments, and His offer of spiritual healing to those who are willing to accept it. It also emphasizes the importance of faith, obedience, and a sincere desire to be made whole in our relationship with Jesus.
As you reflect on this passage, consider how it speaks to your own life. Are there areas where you need healing or restoration? Are you willing to respond to Jesus’ invitation to be made whole? May this study deepen your understanding of God’s love, His desire to bring healing, and His call to faith and obedience.
