John 5:5

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

John 5:5 (KJV)

This verse introduces a specific man at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. The pool was surrounded by five porches and was a gathering place for many disabled people—the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed—who hoped for healing. In this setting, Jesus encounters a man who had been afflicted with an infirmity for thirty-eight years.

The passage does not specify the nature of the man’s infirmity, but it emphasizes his suffering by mentioning the long duration of his condition. Thirty-eight years is a significant period of time, signifying the man’s enduring struggle and his inability to find healing through ordinary means. His presence at the pool indicates his desperation and hope, yet his condition left him unable to enter the water in time when it was stirred. The man’s response to Jesus’ later question reveals his hopelessness and isolation, as he had no one to help him.

In the subsequent verses (John 5:6-9), Jesus asks the man if he desires to be made whole. The man explains his frustration at not being able to reach the pool in time. Then Jesus commands him to rise, take up his bed, and walk, and the man is instantly healed. This healing occurs on the Sabbath, leading to controversy with Jewish leaders and prompting Jesus to explain His divine authority as the Son of God working in unity with the Father.

  • Perseverance in Suffering: The man’s thirty-eight-year struggle demonstrates the importance of perseverance in the face of hardship. Despite his extended suffering, the man did not give up hope entirely and continued to seek healing. This encourages us to persist in our own trials, trusting that God’s timing and plan are perfect.

  • Jesus’ Compassion and Power: Jesus’ healing of the man highlights His compassion and divine power. Jesus, being fully aware of the man’s condition, intentionally seeks him out and restores his health. This reminds us that Jesus is both willing and able to heal us in our physical, emotional, and spiritual infirmities.

  • Faith in Jesus: The man’s healing came through his encounter with Jesus. It was not the pool or any external force that brought him healing, but his response to Jesus’ words and command. This underscores the importance of placing our faith in Jesus and relying on Him as our ultimate source of healing, restoration, and salvation.

The verse highlights the reality of prolonged suffering and the compassionate initiative of Jesus, who sees and knows the man’s condition. It also introduces the theme of Jesus’ authority over sickness and the Sabbath, revealing His identity as the Son of God. The man’s long affliction reminds us that no circumstance is beyond the reach of Christ’s power and mercy.
