John 6:25

Listen to this article

“And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s essential to consider its context within the chapter. John 6 records the miraculous feeding of the five thousand by Jesus, where He multiplied the loaves of bread and fish to satisfy the hunger of a large crowd. Following this event, Jesus withdrew to a mountain alone while His disciples embarked on a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee.

Setting:The verse takes place after Jesus and His disciples had crossed the sea, and the crowd realised that Jesus was no longer with them. They became curious and sought to find Him.

Addressing Jesus:The people who found Jesus on the other side of the sea addressed Him as “Rabbi.” This term signifies a teacher or a master. It indicates that the people recognised Jesus as a knowledgeable and respected teacher.

Their question:The people asked Jesus, “When camest thou hither?” This question reveals their curiosity about how Jesus arrived at the other side of the sea, as they knew that He had not travelled with His disciples. They were seeking an explanation for His presence, considering the lack of a logical means of transportation.

Deeper significance:This verse highlights the interest and curiosity of the people who had witnessed Jesus’ miraculous works. They sought Him out, recognising that there was something extraordinary about Him. However, their focus seemed to be more on the signs and wonders He performed rather than understanding the spiritual significance behind His actions.

The following discourse:The conversation initiated by the people’s question leads Jesus to address their superficial understanding and point them towards a deeper spiritual truth. In the subsequent verses (John 6:26-71), Jesus teaches about Himself as the Bread of Life, emphasising the necessity of faith in Him for eternal life.

Overall, John 6:25 sets the stage for Jesus’ subsequent teachings on spiritual matters and invites us to consider the motives behind our own pursuit of Jesus. It prompts us to reflect on whether our focus is solely on the tangible and temporary aspects or if we seek a deeper relationship with Him that transcends earthly concerns.
