John 6:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger discourse known as the "Bread of Life" discourse, where Jesus teaches about Himself as the true bread from heaven. In this specific verse, Jesus responds to the crowd that had followed Him after He miraculously fed them with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:1-14).

Here are some key points to consider in this Bible study:

Motives of the Crowd:Jesus begins by addressing the crowd and their motivations. He tells them that they are seeking Him, not because they saw the signs and miracles He performed, but rather because they were fed with physical food and were satisfied. This reveals that their primary focus was on their physical needs and desires, rather than recognizing the spiritual significance of Jesus’ miracles.

Spiritual Hunger:The crowd’s primary interest was in the physical provision of food, but Jesus desires to shift their focus to spiritual matters. He wants them to understand that He is the true source of life, not just physical sustenance. This theme of spiritual hunger and fulfillment is further developed in the following verses.

Teaching on the Bread of Life:In the subsequent verses (John 6:27-59), Jesus expounds upon Himself as the Bread of Life. He explains that the true bread that gives eternal life is not the physical food they ate but believing in Him, the Son of God, whom the Father has sent. Jesus emphasizes the necessity of a spiritual relationship with Him, which goes beyond temporary physical satisfaction.

Faith and Belief:Jesus’ response to the crowd underscores the importance of genuine faith and belief. The crowd followed Jesus for the wrong reasons, focusing solely on temporal benefits. However, Jesus desires their faith and trust in Him, recognizing Him as the Son of God who provides salvation and eternal life.

  • Application:This passage challenges us to examine our motives for seeking Jesus. Are we primarily seeking Him for personal gain or temporary blessings, or do we seek Him out of a genuine desire for a deep and meaningful relationship with Him? It reminds us that Jesus is not merely a means to fulfill our earthly desires but the ultimate source of eternal life and spiritual nourishment.
