John 6:60

“Many, therefore, of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?”

Context:Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? John 6:60 (KJV)

In this verse, we find Jesus teaching a crowd of disciples and followers. However, when they hear what He says, they find it difficult to understand and accept. This verse reflects a critical moment in Jesus’ ministry, where some of His followers began to question His teachings.

To better understand the context, we can look at the preceding verses. In John 6:53-59, Jesus speaks about the necessity of eating His flesh and drinking His blood to have eternal life. He uses symbolic language to explain the concept of partaking in His sacrifice for the salvation of humanity. However, many of His disciples find this teaching to be challenging and perplexing.

The response from the disciples in verse 60 reveals their struggle to comprehend Jesus’ words. They refer to His teaching as a “hard saying.” This phrase implies that the disciples found His words difficult to accept and understand, perhaps due to their literal interpretation of His symbolic language.

This reaction raises an important point about faith and understanding. Jesus often used metaphors, parables, and symbolic language to convey profound spiritual truths. These teachings required a level of spiritual discernment and openness to receive them. Some of the disciples in this instance struggled to grasp the deeper meaning behind Jesus’ words.

It’s important to note that not all of Jesus’ disciples reacted in the same way. In the following verses (John 6:61-66), Jesus goes on to explain further, emphasizing that the Spirit gives life and that His words are spirit and truth. However, despite His clarification, many of His disciples choose to no longer follow Him, finding His teaching too difficult.

This passage serves as a reminder that understanding and accepting Jesus’ teachings sometimes require spiritual discernment and a willingness to embrace truths that may initially challenge our preconceived notions. It also highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit’s role in illuminating the meaning of God’s Word and enabling us to comprehend the deep truths of the Gospel.
