John 6:61
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
John 6:61 (KJV)
Context
John 6:61 sits within the Bread of Life discourse in Capernaum. In the preceding verses, Jesus taught that He is the bread that came down from heaven and that those who eat His flesh and drink His blood have eternal life (John 6:53-58). This metaphorical language was hard for many of His disciples to accept, and they grumbled about it. The verse immediately before records some disciples saying, “This is an hard saying; who can hear it?” (John 6:60). Jesus, knowing in Himself—without being told—that His disciples were murmuring, asked, “Doth this offend you?”
Meaning
The Greek word translated “offend” is skandalizō, meaning to cause to stumble or fall away. Jesus’ question confronts their unbelief directly. He does not soften His teaching to remove the difficulty; instead, He challenges them to grapple with His words rather than turn away. His divine knowledge is emphasized: He knew their thoughts directly, not through external information, demonstrating His omniscience.
Biblical connections
The question anticipates the following verses, where Jesus asks if they will be further offended when they see the Son of Man ascend (John 6:62), and where He explains that the Spirit gives life and the flesh profits nothing (John 6:63). The immediate outcome is that many disciples turned back and no longer followed Him (John 6:66). This verse reveals that Jesus takes notice of secret murmuring and internal resistance to His doctrine, and He addresses it directly to expose unbelief and call for faith.
Application
John 6:61 serves as a reminder for believers today. Sometimes, the teachings of Jesus can be difficult to understand or accept. However, rather than allowing doubt and offense to hinder our faith, we are called to trust in Him and seek a deeper understanding. It’s essential to remember that Jesus is the source of eternal life, and our relationship with Him is paramount.
Reflection
Jesus’ question, “Doth this offend you?” still reaches us in our moments of struggle. He knows our inner murmuring and does not turn away from it. Instead, He invites us to bring our doubts to Him, trusting that His words, though challenging, lead to eternal life.
