John 7:50
Nicodemus saith vnto them, (He that came to Iesus by night, being one of them,) John 7:50 (KJV)
In John 7 the scene is set during the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. Jesus is teaching in the temple, and a sharp division arises among the crowd concerning His identity. Some proclaim Him the Messiah, while others remain skeptical. The religious leaders—chief priests and Pharisees—stand in strong opposition to His teaching and authority.
Nicodemus emerges as a noteworthy figure in the Gospel of John. Earlier, in John 3, he visits Jesus secretly at night, seeking deeper understanding. Their dialogue about being “born again” or “born from above” leads to the celebrated declaration of God’s love in John 3:16, which underscores the purpose of Christ’s coming into the world. This nocturnal encounter reveals Nicodemus’ genuine desire for spiritual insight.
In John 7:50 the text records Nicodemus in passing, stating simply, “Nicodemus saith unto them.” The brief mention indicates that he is present among the council debating Jesus’ claims. A related reference in John 7:52 records his question to the council, highlighting both his role among the religious leaders and his personal interest in the Messiah.
The trajectory of Nicodemus’ faith is traced throughout the Gospel. Initially cautious, he approaches Jesus privately, yet his curiosity persists. By the crucifixion narrative in John 19:38‑42, Nicodemus, together with Joseph of Arimathea, takes responsibility for Jesus’ body, prepares it for burial, and places it in the tomb. This act of public devotion marks a significant shift from secret inquiry to bold, open alignment with Christ, illustrating the gradual development of his understanding and commitment.
