John 7:49

But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

John 7:49 (KJV)

During the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus taught in the temple, and the people were divided over whether He was the Messiah. The temple officers, sent to arrest Him, returned without Him, saying, “Never man spake like this man” (John 7:46). The Pharisees responded with contempt, asking if any of the rulers or Pharisees had believed in Him (John 7:48). Verse 49 is their dismissive reply.

The phrase “this people who knoweth not the law” refers to the common people, the crowd following Jesus, whom the Pharisees regarded with great contempt. They called them “the people of the earth” (Hebrew: ‘am ha’aretz), a term the religious elite used to distinguish themselves from the ignorant masses. In their view, these people were ignorant of the Law and therefore under a curse. The irony is that the Pharisees, who claimed to be experts in the Law of Moses, failed to recognize Jesus, the very one to whom the Law pointed. Their confidence in their own knowledge led them to reject the Messiah.

The verse connects to the broader biblical theme of the curse of the Law. Deuteronomy 27:26 pronounces a curse on anyone who does not confirm the words of the Law by doing them. Galatians 3:10 quotes this, explaining that all who rely on works of the Law are under a curse because no one can perfectly keep it. This background clarifies that the Pharisees’ accusation, while intended as an insult, inadvertently touched on a profound truth: all are under the curse of the Law due to sin, and the solution is not greater knowledge of the Law but faith in Christ, who became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13).

The passage warns against pride, self-righteousness, and a legalistic approach that can blind believers. It calls us to avoid superficial understanding and to seek a deeper, transformative relationship with God through His Word. Unbelief in Christ carries eternal consequences, and embracing Jesus as Lord and Savior is necessary for salvation.
