In John 18, the chapter begins with Jesus and His disciples leaving the upper room after the Last Supper. They enter the Garden of Gethsemane, where Judas, one of Jesus' own disciples, arrives with a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. Judas identifies Jesus by giving Him a kiss, leading to His arrest.
Jesus is then taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Annas questions Jesus about His disciples and His teaching, but Jesus redirects him to ask those who have heard Him. From there, Jesus is sent to Caiaphas, where false witnesses are brought forward, but their testimonies do not align.
Meanwhile, Peter, one of Jesus' disciples, is recognized and questioned by bystanders, and he denies being associated with Jesus three times, fulfilling Jesus' earlier prophecy. As morning dawns, Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman governor, who questions Him about being a king. Jesus explains that His kingdom is not of this world.
Throughout this chapter, there is a contrast between the actions of Jesus, who demonstrates patience, truth, and submission to God's will, and the actions of those who oppose Him, who resort to deception and violence.
