Jonah 2:9

But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.

Jonah 2:9 (KJV)

Jonah speaks these words from inside the great fish, after fleeing God’s command to go to Nineveh. His prayer moves from distress to resolve, and this verse marks a deliberate turn: “But” signals his choice to worship even in the depths. He has experienced God’s discipline and now responds with commitment.

Jonah declares, “I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving.” In the Old Testament, sacrifice was central to worship, but Jonah emphasizes the attitude behind the act—a heart filled with gratitude. True worship is not mere ritual; it is sincere praise offered to God.

He also promises, “I will pay that that I have vowed.” Vows were voluntary promises made to God, expressing dedication. Jonah acknowledges his responsibility to honor these commitments, showing that faithfulness to God includes keeping our word to Him.

The climax is the confession, “Salvation is of the LORD.” This is the theological center of the verse: deliverance belongs to God alone. Jonah recognizes that his rescue from the fish is entirely the Lord’s doing, affirming God’s sovereignty and grace in salvation.

This verse connects to the broader biblical truth that salvation originates with God. As Jonah credits the Lord for deliverance, the New Testament reveals the ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who offers forgiveness and eternal life (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

Jonah’s example teaches believers to respond to God’s deliverance with gratitude. When we recognize His mercy, our worship should be heartfelt, not merely outward. We are also called to fulfill the promises we make to God, whether in times of trouble or dedication.

Above all, this verse reminds us of our complete dependence on God for salvation. It points us to Christ, the source of redemption, and calls us to credit God alone for His saving work.

Consider your own response to God’s deliverance. Does your worship flow from a thankful heart? Are you faithful to the commitments you have made to Him? Let Jonah’s words inspire you to trust in the Lord for salvation and to live a life of gratitude and obedience.
