Joshua 10:19

And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.

Joshua 10:19 (KJV)

Joshua 10 records Israel’s conquest of Canaan under Joshua. Five Amorite kings formed a coalition to attack Gibeon because the Gibeonites had made a peace treaty with Israel. Israel came to Gibeon’s aid, and God gave them a miraculous victory, including a hailstorm that killed more enemies than the sword. As the Amorite forces fled, Joshua commanded his men not to stop but to pursue, strike the rear guard, and prevent them from reaching their fortified cities.

The command to “stay ye not” emphasizes urgency and thoroughness. The Israelites were not to allow the enemy to escape or regroup in fortified cities, which would have prolonged the campaign. The closing clause, “for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand,” grounds the command in divine assurance. The victory was not achieved by Israel’s strength or strategy alone but by God’s intervention and promise.

This verse echoes Joshua 10:8, where the Lord assured Joshua, “Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand.” God’s promise does not negate human responsibility; rather, it empowers and directs it. The enemies’ defeat was certain because God had given them over, yet Israel was still commanded to pursue and smite them. This pattern of divine sovereignty and human obedience is a recurring biblical theme.

God’s deliverance calls for a corresponding human response of faithful, persistent action. Believers are to be diligent and thorough in carrying out God’s will, not stopping short of full obedience. Partial victory is insufficient; the enemy must not be allowed to regroup or escape. This teaches us to be proactive and decisive in pursuing what is right, preventing evil from taking root, and fully overcoming the strongholds of sin in our lives.

Recognize God’s role in our victories and achievements. The assurance that God has delivered the enemy into our hand is the foundation for confident and complete pursuit. We can act with determination because the outcome is already secured by God’s promise.
