Listen to this article

And Ioshua at that time turned backe, and tooke Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdomes. Joshua 11:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative of Joshua’s conquest of the Promised Land and invites us to explore its context and significance. In Joshua 11 we see Joshua, the successor of Moses, leading the Israelites in a coordinated military campaign against the Canaanite kings and their cities. Verse 1 records that Jabin, the king of Hazor, learned of Israel’s victories over other kings and mustered a coalition to oppose Joshua. In verse 6 the Lord reassures Joshua not to fear, promising to deliver the enemies into his hands, and later commands the hamstringing of horses and the burning of chariots.

Verse 10, the focus of our study, highlights the decisive attack on Hazor. Joshua and his forces “turned back” to the city, captured it, and Joshua personally struck down Jabin with the sword. Hazor was the pre‑eminent city in the region—its strategic location, military strength, and influence over surrounding kingdoms made it the head of all those kingdoms. By defeating its king and taking the city, Israel dealt a severe blow to the Canaanite confederacy, establishing dominance in the north and solidifying the overall conquest of the land.

The passage demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Joshua victory over the Canaanites and to deliver the land into Israel’s possession. It underscores Joshua’s faithfulness and obedience in carrying out divine commands, serving as a spiritual reminder to trust in God’s promises, follow His guidance, and rely on His strength. Joshua’s leadership models courage and reliance on God for believers today, encouraging faithfulness in the face of challenges and opposition. Overall, Joshua 11:10 marks a pivotal moment in the Israelites’ conquest, emphasizing the successful execution of God’s plan and the enduring assurance of His promises.
