Joshua 11:9

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

And Ioshua did vnto them as the Lord bade him: hee houghed their horses, and burnt their charets with fire. Joshua 11:9 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative of the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. The book of Joshua records that after crossing the Jordan River, the people of Israel engaged in a series of battles against the Canaanite nations who occupied the land God had promised to give them. The specific action described in Joshua 11:9 occurs during one of these decisive engagements.

Joshua’s Obedience

The verse opens by stating that Joshua acted exactly as the Lord commanded. This highlights Joshua’s consistent obedience to divine instruction, a theme that runs throughout the book. His faithfulness in following God’s guidance is presented as a key factor in the Israelites’ victories.

Houghing the Horses

The term “houghed” means that the sinews of the horses’ hind legs were cut, rendering the animals useless for combat. By disabling the horses, Joshua prevented the Canaanites from employing them in battle or quickly restoring their military strength. This measure demonstrates the thoroughness of the Israelite strategy.

Burning the Chariots

In addition to houghing the horses, Joshua ordered the chariots to be set ablaze. Chariots represented a major tactical advantage in the ancient Near East, and their destruction removed a significant element of the enemy’s firepower. The burning of the chariots further weakened the Canaanite capacity to resist Israel.

The Waters of Merom

The actions took place “at the waters of Merom,” referring to the Lake Huleh region, a swampy area in northern Israel. This geographical detail situates the event and underscores the completeness of the divine command being carried out in a specific locale.

Spiritual Significance

Although the passage records a military operation, it also carries spiritual weight. Joshua’s willingness to execute the Lord’s instructions illustrates the broader principle that true success and victory flow from aligning one’s actions with God’s will. The verse serves as a reminder that obedience to divine guidance is essential in all aspects of life.

Overall, Joshua 11:9 showcases Joshua’s faithfulness, the meticulous nature of Israel’s military tactics, and the guiding hand of God that led to the successful conquest of the land. Readers are encouraged to approach the study of Scripture with reverence and, when needed, to consult scholarly resources or spiritual mentors for deeper insight.
