Joshua 12:6

Them did Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the Lord gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

Joshua 12:6 (KJV)

Joshua 12 is a summary of the kings and territories that Israel conquered under Moses and Joshua. This verse recalls the victories Moses led against Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, whose lands lay east of the Jordan River. The chapter shows God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to Israel.

After the exodus from Egypt and forty years of wandering, the Israelites entered the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. The detailed division of the land among the twelve tribes is recorded later in Joshua 13-21, but Joshua 12 recounts the allocation of the Transjordan region to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

The verse identifies Moses as “the servant of the LORD,” a title of honor and authority. It emphasizes his faithful leadership appointed by God. Moses led the people out of Egyptian slavery, received the Law, and, before his death, oversaw the conquest of the Transjordan region, allocating portions of the land to the three eastern tribes.

Moses gave the conquered territory as a possession to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes had requested this region because its pastureland suited their large herds of livestock. The land was a gift from God, distributed according to His command through Moses.

This allocation fulfilled the request these tribes made in Numbers 32, and it is detailed in Numbers 21 and Deuteronomy 3. The verse also shows continuity: the conquest began under Moses and continued under Joshua, as the next verses list the kings Joshua defeated west of the Jordan. For the original audience, this record confirmed that God had given them the land as promised.

The verse underscores the faithfulness of Moses as the servant of the LORD. His obedience and leadership paved the way for the fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel. The distribution of land to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh demonstrates God’s provision for the specific needs and requests of His people, supplying suitable territory for their livestock.

The division of the land among the tribes signifies the importance of unity and cooperation among God’s people. Each tribe received a specific portion and was expected to work together to possess and cultivate their inheritance. The conquest and allocation were not merely the result of human effort but of God’s sovereign hand.

Joshua 12:6 showcases the faithfulness of Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the fulfillment of God’s promises to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. It teaches enduring lessons about faithfulness, divine provision, communal unity, and the sovereign power of God in the lives of His people. The victories and the granting of land remind us that God fights on our behalf and grants us victory according to His promises.
