Joshua 13:31

And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

Joshua 13:31 (KJV)

Joshua 13 records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after the conquest. This verse belongs to the account of Moses giving inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh, as described in Joshua 13:29-31. The territory lies east of the Jordan River, in Bashan, which Israel had conquered from King Og. The land was not given by chance; it was assigned according to God’s command through Moses, showing divine order. This allocation is part of the broader fulfillment of God’s promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants.

The verse names three places: half of Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei. These were cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. Ashtaroth and Edrei were royal cities, centers of Og’s power. The inheritance went to the children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, specifically to half of his descendants, by their families. This shows that land was distributed according to family lines, not by chance or personal choice. The careful listing of cities and family groups shows that God keeps His word in detail. The mention of these former royal centers highlights the defeat of a powerful king and the transfer of his domain to God’s people.

The defeat of Og is recorded earlier in the conquest, and his cities became part of Israel’s inheritance. This fulfills God’s promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants. The same promise appears throughout the land division, where each tribe and family received a specific portion. The verse illustrates God’s faithfulness in providing for His people, as each family received its share. It also shows the importance of genealogical divisions, reflecting the order of Israelite society. The precision of the record underscores that God’s covenant promises are reliable and detailed.

God’s faithfulness to Israel encourages us to trust His promises today. Just as He gave the land to Machir’s descendants after many years, He remains faithful to His word in our lives. We can rely on Him to provide for us and to fulfill His plans in His perfect timing, even when we wait. When we face delays or uncertainties, we can remember that God sees the end from the beginning and works all things according to His purpose. The same God who assigned specific land to each family knows our needs and will supply them.

This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over the details of our lives. He knows each family and each need. The inheritance given to Machir’s children was not random; it was part of God’s ordered plan. We can rest in the knowledge that our lives are also under His care, and He will give us what is good for us. Just as the land was divided with precision, so God’s care for us is precise and personal. His faithfulness to a half-tribe encourages us to trust Him with our own portion.
