Joshua 19:11
And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;
Joshua 19:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of how Joshua divided the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel after they crossed the Jordan River. Here the boundary of the tribe of Zebulun is being described. The border went up toward the sea, meaning the Mediterranean Sea, giving Zebulun access to the coast. This coastal access was a significant part of the inheritance.
Meaning
The landmarks Maralah and Dabbasheth marked points along Zebulun’s border. Their exact locations are not known today, but they served as reference points to define the tribe’s inheritance. The river before Jokneam was likely a stream or wadi near the city of Jokneam, which lay close to Mount Carmel. This river marked the eastern extent of Zebulun’s land. Such specific details show the precision of the tribal allotments.
Biblical connections
Earlier blessings promised that Zebulun would dwell by the sea and be a haven for ships (Genesis 49:13). This verse shows that promise being fulfilled in a concrete way, as Zebulun’s territory included coastal access. The careful listing of boundaries reflects God’s faithfulness in giving each tribe its promised portion. God’s promises to Israel were fulfilled in concrete, historical terms.
Application
God did not leave their inheritance vague, but marked it with real places. This reminds us that God is a God of order and detail. He knows the exact boundaries of our lives and faithfully provides for His people according to His word. Just as He gave Zebulun a defined place, He has a defined place for each believer in His purposes.
Reflection
We may not recognize the names Maralah or Dabbasheth, but their presence in Scripture shows that God cares about the details of His people’s lives. We can trust Him to guide us within the boundaries He has set. His provision is not vague but specific, and His faithfulness extends to every part of our journey.
