Joshua 19:17

And the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families.

Joshua 19:17 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records how God gave the Promised Land to the twelve tribes of Israel. By this point, the people had crossed the Jordan River and had begun to settle in Canaan. The fourth lot came out for Issachar, the tribe descended from Jacob’s son Issachar. This allotment lay in the northern part of Canaan, south of Zebulun and west of the Jordan. The casting of lots was not a game of chance; it was a sacred method by which God directed the distribution of the inheritance.

The phrase “according to their families” shows that the land was divided carefully among the clans of Issachar. Each family received a portion that could be preserved and passed down. This was not a reward for merit but a gift from God, given in an orderly way. The following verses list cities within Issachar’s territory, such as Jezreel and Shunem, showing that this was a real, usable inheritance.

This allocation fulfilled the promise God made to Abraham in Genesis 12:7, that his descendants would receive the land of Canaan. The tribe of Issachar later became known for wisdom and discernment, as described in 1 Chronicles 12:32. They understood the times and knew what Israel should do. That reputation grew from their settled place in God’s plan, not from their own cleverness.

God still directs the details of our lives, just as He directed the lots for each tribe. We can trust that our circumstances are not random but are part of His faithful provision. The inheritance given to Issachar reminds us to steward what God has entrusted to us, whether land, time, or abilities. We should also seek discernment, asking God to help us understand our own times and respond wisely.

God’s faithfulness to Issachar is a picture of His faithfulness to us. He keeps His promises, and He provides for His people in an orderly way. The land was a tangible sign of His covenant, and its distribution was a sacred act. As we consider this verse, we can thank God that our inheritance in Him is secure and that He guides our steps with the same care He showed to Israel.
