Joshua 19:30

Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twentie and two cities with their villages. Joshua 19:30 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records how the land of Canaan was divided among the twelve tribes of Israel after they crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land. Chapter 19 focuses on the territory allotted to the tribe of Naphtali, one of the northern tribes. The cities listed in Joshua 19:30—Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob—are part of Naphtali’s inheritance.

Ummah was one of the cities assigned to Naphtali, but its exact location has been lost to history, and scholars have not been able to identify it with certainty. Aphek is another city mentioned in the verse; several places bore that name in the region, and the Aphek referred to here is likely the one within Naphtali’s borders. A different Aphek appears elsewhere in Scripture, such as in 1 Samuel 4:1, where it is the site of a battle between the Israelites and the Philistines.

Rehob was also allotted to Naphtali. It is thought to be the same Rehob noted in Judges 1:31, situated near the northern border of Israel. As with the other two cities, the precise location of Rehob requires careful contextual interpretation.

The enumeration of these cities provides a concrete picture of how the land was apportioned among the tribes, demonstrating the fulfillment of God’s promise to give each tribe its portion. Although the passage may appear to be merely a list of names, it underscores God’s faithfulness in keeping His covenant.

For believers today, the passage points to a deeper spiritual truth. Just as the physical inheritance was divided among the tribes, God has prepared an eternal inheritance for those who trust in Jesus Christ, as affirmed in 1 Peter 1:3‑4. The reliability of God’s promises in the Old Testament encourages us to place our confidence in His unchanging character and to rely on His provision in our own lives.

In conclusion, Joshua 19:30 highlights the division of the land among the tribes of Israel, specifically naming the cities of Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob within Naphtali’s territory. While the exact sites of these cities may remain uncertain, the passage serves as a reminder of God’s steadfast faithfulness and the assurance believers have of an eternal inheritance in Christ.
