Joshua 19:31

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Joshua 19:31 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after they crossed the Jordan River. The land was apportioned to each tribe as their inheritance, as God had promised. Joshua 19:31 concludes the listing of the territorial inheritance allotted to the tribe of Asher, summarizing the cities and villages that made up their portion.

This verse is a summary statement. The phrase “according to their families” indicates that the land was distributed among the clan subdivisions of the tribe, not merely to the tribe as an undivided whole. The repeated formula “these cities with their villages” underscores the completeness and order of the divine allocation. Asher was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Asher, the son of Jacob and Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid. The preceding verses (Joshua 19:24-30) enumerate the specific cities and villages that constituted Asher’s portion.

In the Old Testament, the concept of inheritance was significant. God made a covenant with the Israelites, promising them the land of Canaan as their inheritance. The division of the land among the tribes symbolized the fulfillment of God’s promise and the establishment of their inheritance. The allotment to Asher was part of the larger division of Canaan among the twelve tribes, carried out under Joshua’s leadership after the conquest. This fulfilled the promise made to the patriarchs that their descendants would possess the land.

The allocation of land to each tribe demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Throughout the book of Joshua, we see how God remained true to His word by guiding the Israelites and helping them conquer the land. The cities and villages mentioned in Joshua 19:31 were distributed among the families within the tribe of Asher, highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation among the people of Israel. The inheritance was meant to benefit not only individuals but also the entire tribe as a community. This principle of unity and shared blessings is relevant in our lives as believers today.

While Joshua 19:31 primarily speaks about the division of land among the tribes, we can draw spiritual lessons from it. As Christians, we have received an inheritance in Christ. Our inheritance includes salvation, eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and our position as children of God. Just as the land was apportioned among the tribes, God has bestowed spiritual blessings upon us as individuals and as part of the community of believers. The listing of cities and villages also reflects the practical, concrete nature of God’s provision—He cares about the details of where His people dwell. For the Christian reader, this verse can serve as a reminder that God assigns each believer a specific place and role within His purposes, and that faithfulness involves embracing and cultivating that assignment. The inheritance of Asher, like that of the other tribes, was a gift from God, not earned by human effort, pointing to the grace that underlies all divine blessings.

Joshua 19:31 provides a snapshot of the inheritance of the tribe of Asher, highlighting God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and the importance of unity among God’s people. It also prompts us to reflect on our spiritual inheritance in Christ and the blessings we receive as part of the body of believers.
