Joshua 19:35

And the fenced cities are Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth,

Joshua 19:35 (KJV)

Joshua 19 records the division of the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel. This chapter gives the inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali, listing its borders and its cities. The verse names five fortified cities within Naphtali’s territory: Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth.

The tribe of Naphtali received land in the northern region of Canaan, bordered by Asher and Zebulun. This area was fertile and strategically important, and it included several walled cities that provided defense and security for the people.

The phrase “fenced cities” means cities with walls and defensive structures. These were not open villages but protected settlements, able to withstand attacks from enemies. The listing of these cities shows that God gave Naphtali not only land but also places of safety within that land.

Some of these cities are difficult to locate today. Ziddim and Zer, for example, have no certain ancient site. Hammath is associated with hot springs, and Chinnereth is also the name of the Sea of Galilee, sometimes called the Sea of Chinnereth. Rakkath is later known as Tiberias, a city near the western shore of that sea.

The record of these cities connects to the broader promise that God would give Israel a land, as Joshua 21:43-45 later confirms. The detailed lists of tribal inheritances show that God kept His word in a concrete way, providing for each tribe a specific place to live. The fortified cities also remind readers that life in the Promised Land required vigilance and trust in God’s protection.

God’s care for Naphtali was detailed and practical. He did not give a vague promise but a real inheritance with named cities. Believers can trust that God also provides for their needs in specific, tangible ways, even when the details seem ordinary or unnoticed by others.

The fortified cities teach that God is concerned with protection as well as provision. In a world with many dangers, God offers security to those who trust Him. This does not mean trouble will never come, but that God is a refuge for His people.

This verse may seem like a simple list of names, but it is part of the larger story of God’s faithfulness. Every city named was a gift from God to His people. When we read such lists, we can pause to thank God for the many specific ways He has provided for us, even in details we might overlook.
