Joshua 2:15
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
Joshua 2:15 (KJV)
Context
Joshua sends two spies to Jericho before the attack. Rahab, a Canaanite woman, hides them on her roof and protects them from the city’s officers. In this verse, she lowers them through a window with a cord because her house sits on the town wall. This action comes after she has secured their oath to spare her family (Joshua 2:12-14).
Meaning
Rahab’s action is both practical and daring. The cord is likely a strong rope, and the window provides a secret exit that bypasses the city gate. Her house’s location on the wall makes the escape possible. By helping the spies, she risks her life, for aiding Israel’s enemies would bring severe punishment. Her choice shows active faith in the God of Israel, whom she has come to fear and trust. She acts on that faith even though she cannot see the outcome.
Biblical connections
Rahab’s faith is later praised in Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25, where she is an example of faith working through deeds. Her escape plan resembles Paul’s escape from Damascus, when disciples let him down through a wall in a basket (Acts 9:25). More importantly, Rahab becomes an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5), showing that God includes Gentiles and former sinners in His redemptive plan. Her story foreshadows the inclusion of all nations in God’s salvation.
Application
Rahab teaches that faith leads to courageous action. She could not see the outcome, yet she trusted God’s promises and acted. Her example encourages believers to obey God even when the path is risky or unclear. God often uses ordinary people in strategic places to accomplish His purposes, just as He used Rahab’s house on the wall. He honors such faith, as the New Testament confirms.
Reflection
God’s providence is seen in the details. Rahab’s home was positioned exactly where the spies needed an escape. This reminds us that God orders circumstances for His plans. Rahab’s story also shows that no one is beyond God’s grace. Her faith, though born in a pagan city, was genuine and honored. We can trust that God sees our situations and provides a way of deliverance, just as He did for the spies through a simple cord.
