Joshua 21:42

Listen to this article

These cities were euery one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities. Joshua 21:42 (KJV)

Context: The book of Joshua is a historical account of the Israelites entering the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua after the death of Moses. In this verse Joshua is dividing the land among the twelve tribes of Israel, specifically referring to the cities given to the Levites, who were set apart for the service of God.

God’s Promise Fulfilled: Throughout the book of Joshua we see God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to the Israelites. One of those promises was to give the Israelites the land of Canaan as their inheritance (Genesis 15:18‑21). In Joshua 21:1‑41 the allocation of cities to the Levites is detailed, and verse 42 records that every city with its surrounding suburbs was given, demonstrating the fulfillment of God’s promise.

The Levites’ Inheritance: The Levites were not given a single tribal territory like the other tribes. Instead they received cities scattered throughout the land, each with its surrounding pasturelands (suburbs). These cities served as dwelling places for the Levites and their families, and the Levites were responsible for teaching the Law of God to the people.

God’s Provision and Care: The allocation of cities to the Levites highlights God’s provision and care for His people. He ensured that those charged with the nation’s spiritual welfare had places to live and to carry out their duties, showing His concern for the needs of His people and His desire for a solid foundation of faith.

Application – Faithfulness and Service: Joshua 21:42 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises and calls us to serve God and others. Like the Levites, we are called to be devoted to God’s service and to live lives that reflect His character, faithfully carrying out our responsibilities and sharing His Word.

Gratitude and Trust: Reflecting on the fulfillment of God’s promises and His provision, we should cultivate gratitude and trust in Him. Just as God provided for the Levites, He provides for our needs and equips us for the tasks He has given us, guiding and enabling us to serve Him effectively.

In summary, Joshua 21:42 showcases the fulfillment of God’s promises to the Israelites as all the designated cities with their suburbs were given to the Levites. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His provision for His people, and our call to faithful service and trust in Him.
