These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.

Context

The book of Joshua records the Israelites entering the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses’ death. This verse concludes the account of the cities given to the Levites, the tribe set apart for the service of God. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no single territorial inheritance; instead, they were given cities scattered throughout the land, each with its surrounding pasturelands, or suburbs.

Meaning

The verse states that every one of these cities was given with its suburbs round about it. The suburbs were open pasturelands extending about two thousand cubits on every side of the city, assigned for the Levites’ cattle and provisions. This summary follows the total given in Joshua 21:41, which says that all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their suburbs. Of these, six were cities of refuge, and the remaining forty-two were for the priests and Levites to dwell in.

Biblical connections

This arrangement fulfilled God’s command given through Moses before the Israelites entered the land. The detailed allocation in Joshua 21:1-41 shows that every city and its suburbs were provided, and verse 42 confirms that none was lacking. This verse also serves as a transition to Joshua 21:43-45, which declares that the LORD gave Israel all the land He swore to their fathers, that they possessed it and dwelt in it, and that not one of all the good things the LORD had spoken failed; all came to pass.

Application
