Joshua 22:4

And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan.

Joshua 22:4 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records how Israel entered the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses died. By Joshua 22, the main wars were finished, and the land was being divided among the tribes. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan River. Yet they had promised to cross the river and help their brothers conquer the land to the west. They kept that promise and fought alongside the other tribes until the land was subdued.

Now Joshua speaks to these eastern tribes. He tells them that the Lord has given rest to their brethren, just as He promised. This rest means the end of warfare and the beginning of settled life in the land. God had kept His word to give Israel a homeland. The time had come for the eastern tribes to return to their own territory.

The phrase “return ye, and get you unto your tents” means they were to go back to their homes and families. The word “tents” here points to their dwellings, not to military camps. Their land of possession was the inheritance that Moses, the servant of the Lord, had assigned to them on the other side of Jordan. This was a legitimate, God-ordained arrangement. They were not abandoning their brothers; they were returning to the portion God had given them.

Joshua’s words also show that the eastern tribes had fully completed their duty. They had not left early or made excuses. They had stayed until the rest of their brethren was secure. Now they received permission to enjoy their own inheritance. Their obedience and faithfulness were rewarded with peace and restoration.

This rest is part of a larger promise. Earlier, God had promised to give Israel rest from their enemies, as seen in Deuteronomy 12:9-10. Joshua 21:44 confirms that the Lord gave Israel rest on every side, exactly as He had sworn to their fathers. Joshua 22:4 applies that promise to the eastern tribes. Their return was not a separation from Israel but a completion of the shared mission. The unity of the nation remained, even though the tribes lived on opposite sides of the river.

This verse teaches that God is faithful to His promises. He had promised rest, and He gave it. Believers today can trust that what God has promised, He will perform. The eastern tribes also model the importance of keeping commitments. They had made a promise to their brothers, and they kept it fully before seeking their own comfort. Faithful service often requires patience and sacrifice, but it leads to the blessing of rest.

There is also a lesson about receiving what God has given. The eastern tribes were told to go and possess their land. They had to actually return and settle there. In the same way, believers are called to receive and enjoy the spiritual blessings God provides, not merely to know about them.

Consider the rest that God gives. It is not only the absence of conflict but the presence of His peace and provision. The eastern tribes returned to their tents, their families, and their inheritance. Their rest came after a long season of duty. God’s rest often comes after faithful obedience. Take time to thank God for His faithfulness and to examine whether you are fulfilling the commitments He has placed before you. Trust that He who promised is able to give rest to His people.
