Joshua 24:24
And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
Joshua 24:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes Joshua’s farewell address to Israel at Shechem. After leading the people into Canaan, Joshua gathered all the tribes to renew their covenant with God. He reminded them of the Lord’s faithful acts, from Abraham to the conquest of the land, and then challenged them to choose whom they would serve. The people had already promised to serve the Lord in Joshua 24:21, and now they repeat that promise a third time, adding that they will obey His voice.
Meaning
The people’s words are a corporate pledge, not just a personal wish. They call God “the LORD,” which in Hebrew is Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God who rescued them from Egypt and gave them the land. To serve Him means to acknowledge His authority and to live under His rule. To obey His voice means to listen carefully and follow His revealed commands. These two actions belong together: true service includes obedience, and genuine obedience flows from a heart that serves.
Biblical connections
The triple affirmation carries weight. Scripture teaches that every matter is confirmed by two or three witnesses, so the people’s repeated promise shows how serious and sincere their commitment was. Yet the same chapter warns of the danger of empty words. After this response, Joshua set up a stone as a witness against Israel, reminding them that their promise was binding before God. Later history shows that Israel did not fully keep this vow, which turns their bold words into a caution against presumption.
Application
This verse calls believers to make a deliberate, public decision to serve the Lord and obey His voice. Such a decision is not a one-time event but a daily pattern of life. It means surrendering our own plans and listening for God’s direction in Scripture, prayer, and the counsel of other believers. Our words should match our actions, for God takes our promises seriously.
Reflection
Like Israel, we often speak strong words of devotion but later fail to follow through. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts. Do we truly serve God with our whole lives, or do we only say we do? The people’s response is a model of wholehearted devotion, but it also reminds us that sincere commitment must be kept. Let us ask God for the grace to serve Him faithfully and to obey His voice every day.
