Joshua 4:17

Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.

Joshua 4:17 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records how the Israelites entered the Promised Land after Moses died. In Joshua 4, the nation crossed the Jordan River on dry ground because God parted the waters. The priests carried the Ark of the Covenant and stood in the middle of the riverbed while all the people passed over. In verse 16, the LORD told Joshua to command the priests to come up out of the Jordan. Joshua 4:17 records Joshua’s faithful execution of that command. This command was given in direct obedience to the LORD, showing that Joshua followed God’s instructions exactly.

The phrase “Come ye up out of Jordan” describes an upward climb from the riverbed to the bank. The priests had been standing in the midst of the river, holding the ark, until the whole nation had crossed. Their emergence marked the completion of their role in the miracle. As soon as their feet touched dry ground, the waters returned and flowed at flood stage as before (Joshua 4:18). This shows that the miracle lasted only as long as God’s command was obeyed. The priests’ obedience in standing firm and then coming up at the command illustrates trust in God’s timing and word.

This event echoes the Red Sea crossing, when God made a way where there seemed to be no way. The crossing of the Jordan demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His promise to give Israel the land of Canaan. The chapter also tells of twelve stones set up at Gilgal as a lasting memorial of God’s mighty work. Joshua’s leadership was magnified in the sight of Israel (Joshua 4:14), and his precise obedience to God’s instruction was central to the miracle. The broader chapter emphasizes the memorial as a reminder of God’s faithfulness.

This verse teaches the importance of prompt and complete obedience to God’s commands. The priests did not leave the river early or stay too long; they waited for Joshua’s word. In our lives, we are called to trust God’s timing and to complete the tasks He assigns. When God says to move forward, we should not linger. Obedience to God’s Word is vital for success in our spiritual journey, and we can rely on His presence and guidance wherever we go. God’s power is displayed through faithful human agency, and He accomplishes His purposes through our service.

As we face daunting challenges, we can remember that God is able to make a way and that He is with us. We are encouraged to recognize and celebrate the completion of significant milestones in our walk of faith, giving thanks for God’s faithfulness and provision. The priests’ example calls us to obey promptly, trust His timing, and testify of His mighty works.
