Joshua 5:1
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Joshua 5:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records events after Moses’ death as Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land. In Joshua 5, the people have just crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. The news of this miracle spreads quickly among the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and the Canaanite kings near the Mediterranean Sea.
The crossing marked the end of wilderness wandering and the beginning of taking the land God promised to Abraham. Just as the Red Sea crossing freed Israel from Egypt, the Jordan crossing showed that God was leading them into a land flowing with milk and honey.
Meaning
The verse says the kings’ hearts melted and no spirit remained in them. This is a strong Hebrew picture of total terror and loss of courage. The enemy did not just feel afraid; they lost all will to fight. The cause was not Israel’s army but the LORD, who dried up the waters. This shows that God goes before His people and prepares the way.
The phrase “until we were passed over” is striking. The writer includes himself among the people, even though this generation had crossed the Jordan. This reminds readers that the whole nation shared in God’s deliverance. The miracle belonged to all Israel, not only to those who stepped into the river.
Biblical connections
God had promised to put the fear of Israel on the nations before they entered the land (Deuteronomy 2:25, 11:25). The reaction of these kings fulfilled that promise. Their melted hearts showed that God’s reputation went before His people. The same power that parted the Red Sea and the Jordan caused the enemy to lose heart.
This event also prepared the way for what happened at Gilgal. There, Israel renewed their covenant through circumcision and kept the Passover before the battle of Jericho. The fear of the kings gave Israel a moment of peace to obey God and remember His faithfulness.
Application
Joshua 5:1 teaches that God can overcome any obstacle. When His people follow His leading, He can act in ways that remove fear from the strongest opposition. The kings’ despair was not because Israel was mighty, but because the LORD had acted. Believers can trust that God is able to defeat every enemy of His purposes.
The verse also encourages us to remember and tell of God’s mighty deeds. The news of the crossing spread because people spoke about it. When we share what God has done, it can bring hope to the faithful and warning to those who oppose Him.
Reflection
God’s power is greater than any human strength. The kings of the Amorites and Canaanites had armies and cities, but their courage vanished when they heard what the LORD had done. This is a reminder that no wall, army, or plan can stand against the God who controls the waters. His promises are sure, and His people can move forward without fear.
