Joshua 7:18

And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

Joshua 7:18 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses’ death. After the miraculous fall of Jericho, God strictly commanded them not to take any of the devoted spoils for themselves. In Joshua 7, the Israelites attack the smaller city of Ai, but they are defeated, and some soldiers die. Joshua seeks God, who reveals that sin in the camp has caused this failure.

God directs Joshua to bring the tribes, families, and households before Him, one by one. The process moves from tribe to clan to family to household, showing that God’s judgment is thorough. In this verse, Joshua brings Achan’s household forward man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, is taken. The word “taken” means the lot fell on him, and he was seized and held.

The detailed genealogy—Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah—emphasizes the precision of God’s knowledge and judgment. God knows exactly who sinned, and He reveals it clearly. Achan’s connection to Judah, the tribe from which the Messiah would come, shows that even within a privileged lineage, individual sin must be dealt with.

Achan had taken a Babylonian garment, silver, and gold from Jericho and hidden them in his tent. His disobedience brought God’s anger on the whole nation, causing their defeat at Ai. This verse is the climax of the divine process of exposure, demonstrating that hidden sin cannot remain hidden from God.

The selection process in Joshua 7:16-18 reflects the seriousness of covenant disobedience. God had told Joshua that sin was in the camp (Joshua 7:10-15), and the lot confirmed His word. This event also connects to the principle that sin affects the community, as seen in the defeat at Ai. The detailed record of Achan’s lineage underscores that God’s judgment is personal and precise.

This verse teaches that hidden sin has public consequences. Achan’s secret act affected the entire nation, and God brought it to light. Believers today should examine their lives for areas of disobedience or compromise that may hinder their relationship with God and affect others.

God’s commands are meant to be followed, and disobedience can have severe consequences. We should take His instructions seriously and not compromise His standards for personal gain. Sin affects others, so we must consider the impact of our choices on the community of faith.

God is holy and expects His people to be holy. Achan’s sin defiled the camp and hindered God’s presence and blessing. When we fall short, we should seek forgiveness and restoration, knowing that God desires repentance. The story of Achan reminds us that our actions matter and that obedience is vital for spiritual well-being.

God sees what is hidden and will bring all things to light. This truth calls us to live with integrity, not only before others but also before God. Even when no one else knows our failures, God does, and He cares about the holiness of His people. Let this verse encourage honest self-examination and a renewed commitment to follow God’s Word completely.
