Joshua 9:11

Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

Context

The book of Joshua records Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After the victories at Jericho and Ai, the Gibeonites, a Canaanite tribe living nearby, feared for their lives. Rather than fight, they chose deception, disguising themselves as travelers from a distant country and approaching Israel to request a treaty.

Meaning

In this verse, the Gibeonite spokesmen report that their elders and all the inhabitants of their country had instructed them: take provisions for the journey, go to meet Israel, say “We are your servants,” and ask for a league—a formal covenant of peace and mutual assistance. The verse reveals the collective decision behind the ruse and the rehearsed speech designed to convince Israel of their false origin.

Biblical connections

The deception succeeded because Israel did not seek the LORD’s counsel (Joshua 9:14). This failure stands as a warning about relying on human judgment rather than divine guidance. Later, when the ruse was discovered, Israel honored the covenant, showing the binding nature of oaths made before God.
