Joshua 9:26

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

Joshua 9:26 (KJV)

Joshua 9 tells how the Gibeonites, a Canaanite people, feared Israel’s advance. They disguised themselves as travelers from a far country, carrying worn clothes, dry moldy bread, and old wineskins. They asked Joshua for a peace treaty. Without asking the Lord, Joshua and the leaders swore an oath to spare them. Later the deception was discovered, but the covenant stood.

Verse 26 shows Joshua keeping that promise. He delivered the Gibeonites from the angry Israelites, so they were not killed. The next verse adds that Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and the altar, a lasting service. This spared their lives but placed them in humble work.

The verse highlights the binding power of an oath made in God’s name. Even though the Gibeonites lied, Joshua honored the covenant. His action shows that a promise before God is serious and must be kept, even when keeping it costs something.

Joshua’s integrity stands out. He could have used the deception as a reason to break the treaty, but he did not. He chose faithfulness over convenience. This teaches that our word should hold firm, especially when we have called on God in our commitments.

The account warns against hasty decisions made without divine guidance. Joshua 9:14 says the leaders did not ask the Lord. Their failure to seek God led to the deception. This connects with the broader biblical principle that wisdom begins with consulting God, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6, where trusting the Lord directs our paths.

God’s mercy also appears here. The Gibeonites, though deceivers, were spared and brought near to the tabernacle service. This foreshadows how Gentiles would later be included in God’s redemptive plan, not because of their worthiness but because of His grace.

Keep promises even when new information makes them hard. Integrity builds trust and honors God. Before making major decisions, pray, study Scripture, and seek wise counsel. Not every opportunity is as it appears, and God’s direction helps avoid deception.

Remember that God remains faithful despite human mistakes. He can work through our errors to accomplish His purposes. When we fail, we can trust Him to guide us toward restoration and growth.

Consider your own commitments. Are there promises you have made that now feel costly? Ask God for strength to keep them with grace. Also examine your decision-making. Do you rush ahead without prayer? Let Joshua’s example remind you that seeking God first brings wisdom, and honoring your word reflects His faithfulness.
