Joshua 13 details the distribution of the land inheritance to the tribes of Israel. As Joshua grew old, the Lord commanded him to divide the remaining unconquered territories among the nine and a half tribes. The eastern region, beyond the Jordan River, was allotted to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. This land encompassed various cities and territories, including Heshbon, Jazer, and Gilead. The tribe of Levi, being dedicated to the service of the Lord, did not receive a specific territory but were given cities to reside in among the other tribes.
Despite the progress made by the Israelites in claiming the Promised Land, there were still areas left unconquered, inhabited by the Canaanites. The territories of the Philistines, Geshurites, and the Avites were among those that remained unconquered. The Lord reassured Joshua that He Himself would drive out these nations before the Israelites, and it was their responsibility to divide the land among the tribes.
