Jude 1:19
These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
Jude 1:19 (KJV)
Context
The book of Jude is a short letter written by Jude, the brother of James and Jesus. It was written to encourage believers to contend for the faith and to expose and refute false teachers and their teachings. Jude warns the readers about certain individuals who had infiltrated the Christian community and were leading others astray.
Jude describes these people as those “who separate themselves.” They were likely a group within the church who had chosen to separate from the teachings and authority of the apostles and the wider body of believers. Their divisive nature caused divisions and discord within the community of faith. This warning is not against separation from openly profane sinners, which can be commendable, but against separating from the saints and the fellowship of believers.
Meaning
The term “sensual” in this context refers to their natural instincts and desires. The Greek word behind it, psychikos, describes someone controlled by natural, worldly passions rather than by the Spirit. These individuals were driven by their fleshly cravings, focusing on satisfying their own selfish desires rather than following God’s will. They lived according to carnal principles, disregarding righteousness and godliness.
Jude emphasises that these individuals did not have the Holy Spirit. This implies that they were not truly born again and did not possess the indwelling presence of the Spirit of God. They lacked the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, which is essential for genuine Christian living. Their actions and teachings were not guided by the Spirit’s wisdom and discernment. The verse serves as a diagnostic: those who cause divisions and are driven by natural desires show evidence of not having the Spirit.
Application
As believers, we should be vigilant in discerning false teachings and divisive influences that may arise within the church. We are called to be led by the Holy Spirit, allowing His guidance and transformation in our lives. It is important to maintain unity and uphold the truth of God’s Word, being careful not to be swayed by worldly desires or the allure of false teachings.
Jude’s words serve as a warning to believers about the presence of false teachers and the potential for division within the church. They encourage us to remain grounded in sound doctrine, to recognise and expose false teachings, and to guard against being influenced by those who distort the truth. Overall, Jude 1:19 reminds Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, resisting the pull of worldly desires and false teachings, while relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance and discernment.
