Judges 1:13

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Judges 1:13 (KJV)

After Joshua’s death, Israel faced the task of settling the Promised Land. This verse belongs to a record of tribal conquests. Othniel, son of Kenaz, was Caleb’s younger brother from the tribe of Judah. Caleb had promised his daughter Achsah to the man who captured Kiriath-sepher, also called Debir (Joshua 15:16-17). Othniel took the city, and Caleb kept his word.

Othniel’s victory shows courage and trust in God’s promises. He did not hesitate to face a fortified stronghold. The reward of Achsah as his wife was not merely a prize; it was the fulfillment of a solemn promise. Caleb’s faithfulness to his word reflects his character and the covenant loyalty valued in Israel.

Othniel later became Israel’s first judge, delivering the people from oppression (Judges 3:7-11). This verse, therefore, marks the beginning of a significant leadership role. The parallel account in Joshua 15:16-17 confirms the event’s importance in the settlement of Judah’s territory. Othniel’s lineage is traced to Kenaz, and he belongs to the tribe of Judah, the same tribe as Caleb.

Believers today can learn from Othniel’s example. Obedience and courage often lead to God’s blessings, though not always in the form of rewards. Trusting God’s promises gives strength to face difficult tasks. Caleb’s integrity also teaches the importance of keeping one’s word, even when it costs something. The narrative highlights the faithfulness of Caleb to his word and the valor of Othniel, who is presented as a courageous and faithful leader.

God raises faithful people to accomplish His purposes. Othniel’s success was not only personal; it advanced the settlement of the land. This reminds us that our acts of faith can have lasting effects on others. We are called to act boldly, trusting that God remains faithful to His promises.
