Judges 11:10

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lord be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

Judges 11:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the story of Jephthah, a valiant warrior whom God used to deliver Israel from Ammonite oppression. The elders of Gilead had rejected Jephthah earlier, but now they come to him for help in battle. In the previous verse, Jephthah asked them to promise that if the Lord gave him victory, they would make him their head. Here, the elders answer with a solemn oath.

The elders call on the Lord as a witness between them and Jephthah. By saying, “The Lord be witness between us,” they place their promise under God’s watchful eye. They know that God sees all and will hold them accountable. Their words, “if we do not so according to thy words,” show that they accept Jephthah’s conditions completely. This is not a casual agreement; it is a binding covenant made before God.

This oath reflects the seriousness of promises made in God’s name throughout Scripture. When people invoked the Lord as witness, they understood that breaking the promise would bring His judgment. The elders’ action also shows that leadership in Israel was confirmed with solemn vows, reminding readers that God is always present in human agreements.

This verse teaches the importance of integrity and faithfulness. When we make promises, especially to fellow believers, we should remember that God hears every word. The elders did not treat their commitment lightly, and neither should we. Whether in family, work, or church, our promises should be kept because God is the unseen witness to all we say and do.

  • Recognize God’s presence in every agreement.

  • Honor your word even when it is costly.

  • Accept accountability before God for your promises.

Consider the promises you have made. Do you speak them with the same reverence as the elders of Gilead? Their oath was not just to please Jephthah; it was a vow made before the all-seeing God. Let this verse encourage you to be a person whose word can be trusted, knowing that the Lord is witness between you and those you promise.
