Judges 11:29

Listen to this article

Then the Spirit of the Lord came vpon Iephthah, and he passed ouer Gilead and Manasseh, and passed ouer Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead hee passed ouer vnto the children of Ammon. Judges 11:29 (KJV)

The book of Judges records a time when Israel was led by a succession of judges whom God raised up to deliver the nation from oppression and turn the people back to faithfulness. Jephthah is one of those judges, and his story illustrates several key truths about God’s work through imperfect people.

Jephthah’s background was marked by rejection and hardship. He was the son of a prostitute and was driven away by his brothers, who refused to share their inheritance with him. Despite this, he became a skilled warrior. When the Ammonites threatened Israel, the elders of Gilead turned to him for help, recognizing his military ability.

Judges 11:29 records that the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. This phrase signals that God’s divine presence and power rested upon him, equipping him for the task ahead. The Holy Spirit’s empowerment was the decisive factor that enabled Jephthah to lead Israel to victory, rather than his own strength alone.

After receiving the Spirit, Jephthah moved from Mizpeh of Gilead—where the elders had appointed him leader—across Gilead, Manasseh, and Mizpeh of Gilead, and then proceeded toward the children of Ammon. This military campaign demonstrates how God’s anointing propelled him forward into battle.

Several lessons emerge from Jephthah’s example. First, God’s sovereign choice is not limited by human circumstances or social bias; He selected a man scorned by his family to be Israel’s deliverer. Second, the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit is essential for accomplishing God’s purposes; Jephthah’s success rested on that divine enablement. Third, God frequently uses unlikely individuals, showing that anyone, regardless of past or status, can be used when they submit to His will. Finally, Jephthah displayed courage and obedience, confronting the Ammonites despite overwhelming odds, trusting wholly in God’s power.

Overall, Judges 11:29 highlights the pivotal moment when the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, empowering him to lead and deliver Israel from its enemies. The passage reminds believers of God’s sovereign choice, the necessity of Holy‑Spirit empowerment, and the truth that God can work through the most unexpected vessels to fulfill His plans.
