Judges 16:19

Listen to this article

And she made him sleepe vpon her knees, and she called for a man, and she caused him to shaue off the seuen lockes of his head, and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. Judges 16:19 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history when they were ruled by a series of judges raised up by God to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Judges 16 records the story of Samson, one of the most well‑known judges, who possessed great strength yet struggled with personal weaknesses.

Samson and Delilah: In this verse we see Samson’s encounter with Delilah, a Philistine woman who became his downfall. She was bribed by the Philistine rulers to discover the secret of Samson’s strength so they could subdue him.

Symbolism of the Seven Locks: The verse mentions that Delilah caused Samson to shave off the seven locks of his head. Samson’s hair was the outward sign of his Nazirite vow taken from birth; as a Nazirite he was consecrated to God and forbidden to cut his hair (Numbers 6:5). His hair represented the source of his supernatural strength, given by God.

Samson’s Vulnerability: His physical strength was tied to his commitment to the Nazirite vow. By revealing the secret of his hair to Delilah, Samson compromised his devotion to God and placed himself at great risk. This episode highlights his weakness for Philistine women and his inability to resist temptation.

Affliction and Loss of Strength: When Delilah called for a man to shave off Samson’s hair, she inflicted suffering on him. The cutting of his hair was not merely physical but represented a deeper spiritual breach. Consequently, the supernatural strength that had enabled him to defeat his enemies was taken from him, foreshadowing his later capture, blinding, and humiliation by the Philistines.

Lessons for Us: Judges 16:19 serves as a powerful reminder to guard our commitments to God and to be aware of our weaknesses. Samson’s story illustrates the consequences of giving in to temptation and compromising our relationship with God. It teaches that even those blessed with great strength can fall if they do not remain steadfast in devotion.

God’s Grace and Redemption: Although Samson suffered the consequences of his actions, his story also reveals God’s grace and the ability to use flawed individuals for His purposes. Later in Judges 16 we see Samson repent and call upon God for strength one final time, leading to his ultimate victory over the Philistines in death. This demonstrates that God can bring redemption even in the midst of failure.

Conclusion: Judges 16:19 is a pivotal verse in the narrative of Samson and Delilah, highlighting the consequences of compromise and loss of strength, warning us to guard our commitments, and revealing God’s grace working through imperfect people.
