Judges 16:7
And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Judges 16:7 (KJV)
Context
The book of Judges records Israel’s repeated cycles of sin, oppression, and deliverance. Samson was a judge God raised to rescue Israel from the Philistines (Judges 13:5). His strength came from God because of his Nazirite vow, which set him apart for holy service.
In Judges 16, Samson loved Delilah. The Philistine rulers paid her to discover the secret of his strength. Delilah pressed him for the answer, and in this verse he gave her a false reply.
Meaning
Samson said that if bound with seven green withs that were never dried, he would become weak and be like any other man. Green withs were fresh, pliable cords or branches, still moist and strong. They could be twisted tightly. His answer sounded believable, but it was a lie. He was testing Delilah and protecting the true source of his strength.
His strength did not come from his hair or any external binding. It came from his covenant relationship with God. By giving a false answer, Samson showed he understood the secret was sacred, yet he still played dangerously with the truth. He did not end the conversation or turn from temptation.
Biblical connections
Samson’s Nazirite vow, described in Numbers 6:1-8, required him to avoid wine, avoid cutting his hair, and stay ceremonially clean. His strength was tied to obedience to that vow. In Judges 16:20, after his hair was cut, the Lord departed from him, and he did not know it. This verse foreshadows that tragic moment by showing Samson’s careless attitude toward his holy calling.
Application
Samson’s example warns us about the danger of compromise. He allowed a relationship with an enemy of God’s people to draw him into deception and risk. Believers today must guard their hearts and avoid alliances that pull them away from faithfulness.
His actions also teach that God’s gifts are not to be treated lightly. Samson toyed with the secret of his strength, and eventually he lost it. We should honor the gifts and callings God gives us, not expose them to harm or use them carelessly.
The enemy, like Delilah, seeks to bind and afflict believers. We must be watchful and not reveal our vulnerabilities to those who intend evil. True safety comes from staying close to God and obeying His commands.
Reflection
Samson’s strength was a gift from God, but his personal weakness made him vulnerable. His story reminds us that spiritual power is not automatic; it depends on a living relationship with the Lord. When we rely on our own cleverness, we become weak. When we trust in God’s strength and remain faithful, He sustains us even in our failures.
This passage also shows God’s patience. Despite Samson’s foolish choices, God continued to work through him and later restored him. We can take comfort that our mistakes do not end God’s purposes, but we must not presume on His grace. The call is to walk in obedience and depend on His power each day.
