Judges 2:16

Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

Judges 2:16 (KJV)

The book of Judges records Israel’s history after Joshua’s death. The people had entered the Promised Land, but they fell into a repeated cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 2:11-15 gives the immediate background: Israel turned away from the Lord and worshipped the false gods of the surrounding nations. This disobedience stirred God’s anger, and He allowed enemies to plunder them. The situation was serious, and the people had no hope in themselves.

The word “Nevertheless” marks a turning point. Even after Israel’s rebellion and the judgment that followed, God did not abandon them. The Lord “raised up judges“—people He chose and equipped in an extraordinary way to save His people. These judges were not self-appointed leaders. They were God’s instruments, raised up to deliver Israel from the hand of those who spoiled them, that is, those who plundered and oppressed them. This action shows God’s mercy and faithfulness even when His people are unfaithful.

The judges served as both military and spiritual leaders. They upheld God’s law, executed justice, and guided the people back to faithfulness. They were not kings but temporary leaders, called by God for specific crises. The following chapters name these judges and show how God used them to restore Israel’s privileges, protect them, and administer justice. This pattern repeats throughout the book, revealing that deliverance always came from the Lord, who raised up saviors again and again. The book itself is named after these judges, showing their central role in this period.

Judges 2:16 teaches that God remains faithful even when His people are unfaithful. He does not forsake them completely but provides leaders and rescuers in times of need. This verse reminds us that God is always ready to forgive and deliver when we repent and turn back to Him. It also highlights the importance of leadership. God can use ordinary people to rescue others from oppression and guide them toward Him. He equips those He calls, giving them what they need for the work.

Consider how God has raised up people in your own life to help you return to Him. Think also about the role you might play in delivering others from spiritual or physical harm. God’s mercy is not a one-time event; it is a recurring grace. When we stray, He does not leave us without hope. He raises up judges, saviors, and guides to bring us back. This verse calls us to trust in God’s faithfulness and to be ready to serve as His instruments of deliverance for others.
