Judges 20:11
So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
Judges 20:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits in the painful story of Judges 19-21. A Levite’s concubine was abused and died in Gibeah, a town of Benjamin. The tribes of Israel gathered to demand justice for that terrible sin. In the preceding verse, they had agreed to supply food for the army, showing their serious commitment. Here, all the men of Israel came together against the city, united in purpose.
Meaning
The phrase “knit together as one man” is powerful. It means more than simple agreement. The Hebrew picture is of many parts joined into one body, like threads woven into cloth. Their unity was not casual; it was a deep, shared resolve. They acted with one mind and one heart to confront evil in their midst. This was not just a crowd; it was a nation acting as a single person.
Biblical connections
This unity stands in contrast to the moral chaos around it. Earlier in Judges, the people often did what was right in their own eyes. Here, they moved together against wrongdoing. Yet their action led to civil war with Benjamin, showing that even righteous anger must be guided by wisdom and humility. The same call to unity appears in the New Testament, where believers are urged to be “knit together” in love (Colossians 2:2).
Application
God’s people today should stand together against sin, but always with care. Unity is good when it serves truth and justice. It becomes dangerous when it feeds self-righteousness or ignores the need for mercy. This verse calls for both courage and humility. It also reminds us that addressing sin can be costly, yet it is necessary for the health of the community.
Reflection
Consider your own response to sin. Are you willing to act with others for what is right? Do you seek unity without losing compassion? Let this verse move you to faithful, thoughtful action.
