Judges 8:2

Listen to this article

And he said vnto them, What haue I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better then the vintage of Abiezer? Judges 8:2 (KJV)

The book of Judges records a turbulent period in Israel’s history after Joshua’s death, when the nation was led by a succession of judges. In chapter 8 Gideon has just secured a decisive victory over the Midianites. In the aftermath the Ephraimites confront him, upset that they were not called to join the battle. Gideon’s reply, recorded in verse 2, is a model of humility and graciousness.

Humility and Gratitude – Rather than becoming defensive, Gideon acknowledges the Ephraimites’ feelings. He asks, “What have I done now in comparison of you?” and likens their contribution to the gleaning of grapes, a valuable but secondary harvest activity. This comparison shows his gratitude for even the smaller part they played in the overall triumph.

Unity and Cooperation – Gideon’s response seeks to preserve unity among the tribes. By recognizing the Ephraimites’ effort and addressing their grievance directly, he prevents division and fosters cooperation. The exposition in the drafts stresses that a leader who engages concerns openly helps maintain harmony within God’s people.

Contentment and Appreciation – The imagery of “gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim” versus the “vintage of Abi‑ezer” highlights contentment with what has been achieved. Gideon does not diminish the Ephraimites’ role; instead, he affirms that every contribution, however modest, is worthy of honor.

Application – This verse teaches several practical lessons for believers today. First, it calls us to humility, recognizing our own shortcomings when others are hurt. Second, it urges us to value each member’s contribution, fostering unity and open communication within the body of Christ. Finally, it reminds us to be content and appreciative of the blessings we receive, understanding that even the smallest acts can further God’s purposes.

In sum, Judges 8:2 presents Gideon’s humble and gracious response to the Ephraimites’ accusation, offering a timeless example of humility, gratitude, unity, and appreciation for every part of God’s work.
