Judges 9:36

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

Judges 9:36 (KJV)

Judges 9 tells how Abimelech, a son of Gideon, seized power over Israel by deceit and violence, killing his brothers. Gaal, a leader in Shechem, opposed him and stirred rebellion. Zebul, the city governor, stayed loyal to Abimelech. In this verse, Gaal sees troops coming down from the mountains and reports it to Zebul.

Zebul answers that Gaal is only seeing the shadow of the mountains, not real men. This is not a simple correction. Zebul deliberately deceives Gaal so that Abimelech’s forces can approach without warning. Gaal’s eyes told the truth, but he accepted a false explanation that contradicted what he saw. Zebul’s words are smooth, but his motive is to keep Gaal from raising an alarm. He has a vested interest in hiding the danger.

The danger of trusting smooth words over clear evidence appears in Proverbs 14:15, which warns that the simple believes every word, but the prudent looks well to his steps. Here Gaal’s failure to trust his own sight leads to his downfall. The broader story of Judges 9 shows that Abimelech’s attack succeeded and Gaal was driven out, proving that human schemes, even with deception, do not finally prosper against God’s purposes. This pattern reminds us that God sees through every lie and brings justice in His time.

This verse warns us to be careful when someone tells us that what we plainly see is not real. People with a vested interest may try to calm our fears or hide danger. We should test what we hear against what we know to be true, and be wary of those who ask us to ignore clear evidence for their own agenda. Seek wisdom from God and exercise discernment in every situation. When a convenient explanation contradicts our senses, we must pause and examine the speaker’s motives.

Deception destroys trust and leads to ruin, both for Gaal and for Abimelech, whose oppressive rule ended in judgment. God sees through every shadow and every lie. We can trust His justice even when leaders deceive. Let us value honesty and integrity, and refuse to be either deceivers or the deceived. Ask God to give you a discerning heart, so that you are not led astray by smooth words that hide the truth.
