Judges 9:55

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

Judges 9:55 (KJV)

This verse closes the account of Abimelech, the son of Gideon by a concubine. He seized power in Shechem by treachery, killing seventy of his brothers. His rule was violent and opposed. In Judges 9:50-54, he besieged Thebez; a woman dropped a millstone on his head, mortally wounding him. He then made his armor-bearer kill him so that he would not be said to have died by a woman’s hand.

When the men of Israel saw Abimelech dead, they scattered, each returning home. Their loyalty had been to his person, not to God’s covenant. His death ended his attempted monarchy and brought relief to the people. The departure also shows the fragile nature of power gained through sin.

The following verses, Judges 9:56-57, state that God repaid Abimelech’s wickedness and the evil of the men of Shechem, fulfilling Jotham’s curse. This event demonstrates that divine justice is certain, even when human schemes seem to succeed for a time. It contrasts with the judges God raised to deliver Israel, for Abimelech sought his own glory.

This verse warns that leadership built on violence and self-interest will not last. When such a leader falls, his followers scatter. True security comes from trusting God, not from human power. The men of Israel returned to their places, but the period of the judges remained marked by tribal disunity.

God remains sovereign over human history. He brings down the proud and vindicates the oppressed. This account encourages believers to seek God’s ways, knowing that pride leads to ruin, but humility and trust in Him bring lasting peace.
