Judges Chapter 2

Summery

In Judges 2, the chapter begins with an angel of the Lord rebuking the Israelites for breaking their covenant with God and worshiping the gods of the surrounding nations. The angel predicts that this disobedience will lead to dire consequences, as these foreign gods will become a snare to the Israelites.

After the death of Joshua and the elders who outlived him, a new generation arises who does not know the Lord or the great works He had done for Israel. The people turn away from God and begin to worship the false gods of the Canaanites. This angers God, who hands them over to their enemies and allows them to be plundered.

Whenever the Israelites face distress, God raises up judges to deliver them. But as soon as a judge dies, the people return to their wicked ways, forsaking the Lord and worshiping idols. This cycle of disobedience and divine punishment continues throughout the chapter.

The chapter concludes with God’s decision not to drive out the remaining nations in the land, but rather to use them to test Israel’s faithfulness. The Israelites are warned that these nations will be a thorn in their sides and that their gods will become a snare to them.
