Lamentations 3:24

Posted on 18 May at 15:00

“The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”

Context:Lamentations is a book of lament written by the prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. It expresses deep sorrow and mourning over the devastation of the city and the suffering of the people. Lamentations 3:24 comes in the midst of Jeremiah’s lament and serves as a powerful statement of hope and trust in the midst of despair.

The LORD is my portion:The phrase “The LORD is my portion” indicates that God is the source of Jeremiah’s satisfaction, provision, and inheritance. In the biblical context, a “portion” refers to an allotted inheritance or possession. By declaring that the Lord is his portion, Jeremiah acknowledges that God is sufficient for all his needs and desires.

Confidence in God:When Jeremiah says, “saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him,” he expresses his unwavering confidence in God’s faithfulness and goodness. Despite the dire circumstances surrounding him, Jeremiah chooses to place his hope in the Lord. He understands that God’s character and promises are unchanging, providing a solid foundation for his hope.

Lessons for us:

  • Trusting in God as our portion:Like Jeremiah, we can find true contentment and fulfillment by recognizing that God is our ultimate source of satisfaction. When we make God our portion, we no longer depend on earthly possessions, achievements, or circumstances to define our worth or provide us with security.
  • Choosing hope in God:When faced with challenges and difficulties, we can follow Jeremiah’s example and place our hope in the Lord. Regardless of our circumstances, God remains faithful and offers us a reason to hope. We can trust in His promises and rely on His strength to carry us through.

Embracing God’s unchanging nature:Jeremiah’s declaration is a reminder that God’s character and promises never change. In a world of uncertainty, God’s faithfulness and goodness remain constant. We can find peace and security in knowing that God is steadfast and trustworthy.

Application:

  • Seek contentment in God:Take time to reflect on the things you rely on for satisfaction and security. Make a conscious effort to prioritise God as your ultimate portion and find contentment in Him.
  • Place your hope in God:When facing challenges or uncertain situations, choose to place your hope in the Lord. Remember His promises and trust in His unfailing love and provision.
  • Meditate on God’s unchanging nature:Remind yourself daily of God’s faithfulness and goodness. Spend time studying His Word to deepen your understanding of His character. Allow this knowledge to anchor your faith and provide you with stability.

In conclusion, Lamentations 3:24 encourages us to find our satisfaction, hope, and security in God. By making Him our portion and placing our trust in His unchanging nature, we can experience contentment and hope, even in the midst of life’s challenges.
