Context

The Book of Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BC. In the preceding verses, Jeremiah describes himself as a man who has seen affliction, whose strength and hope have perished (Lam. 3:1-18). Yet in the midst of this darkness, he recalls a truth that anchors his soul: “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not” (Lam. 3:22).

Meaning

The phrase “They are new every morning” refers to God’s mercies or compassions. Despite dire circumstances, God’s mercies are fresh and renewed with each new day. The Hebrew word for “faithfulness” (emunah) conveys steadfastness, reliability, and fidelity. It speaks of God’s covenant loyalty—His unwavering commitment to His people even when they are unfaithful. His mercies are not exhausted; they are renewed daily, like the morning manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16:21), which was fresh each day.
