Listen to this article

“Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.”

Context of Lamentations: The Book of Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah as a lament over the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the Israelites to Babylon. It expresses deep sorrow and grief over the consequences of the Israelites’ disobedience to God’s covenant.

Understanding Lamentations 3:57:

In this verse, the author acknowledges that when they called upon God, He drew near to them. This highlights the nearness and accessibility of God to those who seek Him. Furthermore, God reassured the author, saying, “Fear not.” This statement signifies God’s presence, comfort, and assurance in times of distress.

Drawing near to God: The verse emphasizes the importance of seeking God during challenging times. It reminds us that when we earnestly call upon Him, He draws near to us. This shows God’s faithfulness and willingness to listen to His people. It encourages us to approach God with our concerns, fears, and anxieties, knowing that He is attentive and ready to provide comfort and guidance.

The assurance of God’s presence: When God says, “Fear not,” it is a powerful reminder of His sovereignty and faithfulness. It assures us that even in the midst of trials and tribulations, we can trust in His presence and provision. God’s promise to be with us should bring us peace and confidence, knowing that He is our source of strength and refuge.

Overcoming fear: Fear is a common human emotion, especially when facing difficulties. However, this verse reminds us that we don’t have to be controlled by fear. Instead, we can find courage and comfort in the nearness of God. Trusting in His promises and relying on His strength enables us to overcome fear and face challenges with faith and resilience.

Application to our lives:

  • Lamentations 3:57 encourages us to develop a consistent prayer life and to seek God diligently in times of trouble. It reminds us that God is not distant or unconcerned but is near and ready to hear our cries. We can find solace in His presence and find the strength to face any situation. We are called to trust in God’s faithfulness and to let go of fear, relying on His promises and guidance.

In summary, Lamentations 3:57 reminds us of the nearness of God when we call upon Him. It assures us that God responds to our cries, encourages us not to fear, and strengthens us in times of trouble. This verse invites us to trust in God’s presence, seek Him fervently, and find comfort in His faithfulness.
