Lamentations 3:56

Listen to this article

“Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.”

Context:The book of Lamentations is a collection of poetic laments traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah. It was written in response to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile. Lamentations expresses deep sorrow, mourning, and a sense of abandonment, but it also contains elements of hope and trust in God’s faithfulness.

The Verse:In Lamentations 3:56, the speaker acknowledges that God has heard their voice and pleas for help. They implore God not to turn away or ignore their cries for mercy. This verse reflects the speaker’s desperation and desire for God’s intervention.

Theological Significance:a. Assurance of God’s Hearing: The verse begins with the affirmation that God has indeed heard the speaker’s voice. It highlights the belief that God is attentive to the prayers and pleas of His people. This provides assurance that God is not indifferent to their suffering or pain.

b. Honest Communication with God: The speaker’s request for God not to hide His ear at their breathing or cry reveals an intimate and personal relationship with God. It reflects the speaker’s boldness and openness in expressing their emotions and struggles before God.

c. God’s Response to Cries for Help: By appealing to God’s hearing and asking Him not to turn away, the verse suggests that the speaker anticipates God’s response to their cry. It implies a plea for mercy, deliverance, and divine intervention in their distress.

Application:

  • Prayer and Communication with God:Lamentations 3:56 encourages believers to approach God with honesty and vulnerability in prayer. Just as the speaker expresses their deepest anguish and cries to God, we too can bring our concerns, fears, and needs before Him, trusting that He hears and cares.
  • Trusting in God’s Faithfulness:This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness even in times of difficulty. We can find solace in knowing that God is attentive to our cries and has the power to intervene in our circumstances according to His perfect will.
  • Perseverance in Prayer:The verse serves as a reminder not to give up in prayer, even when it seems as though God is silent. The speaker’s plea for God not to hide His ear suggests persistence in seeking God’s help and not losing hope in His response.

In summary, Lamentations 3:56 emphasizes the assurance of God’s hearing and the importance of honest communication with Him. It encourages believers to trust in God’s faithfulness and to persevere in prayer, knowing that He is attentive to their cries for help.
