Leviticus 1:7

And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:

Leviticus 1:7 (KJV)

Leviticus records the laws God gave to Israel through Moses. Chapter 1 explains the burnt offering, the first and most basic sacrifice. This verse gives a specific duty to the priests: they must place fire on the altar and arrange the wood in order.

The sons of Aaron were the ordained priests, chosen by God to serve at the altar. Their work was not ordinary labor but a sacred responsibility. The fire they used was not common fire; it had been kindled by God Himself as a sign of His acceptance (Leviticus 9:24). The priests were to keep this holy fire burning continually (Leviticus 6:12-13). Laying the wood in order prepared the altar for the sacrifice that would follow, showing that worship must be done with care and reverence.

The priestly service in Leviticus points to Jesus Christ. He is the great High Priest who offered Himself once for all as the perfect and final sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 9:11-14). The earthly altar and its fire were shadows of His complete atoning work. Believers today are described as a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), called to offer spiritual sacrifices through Christ.

This verse teaches that God must be approached on His terms, not ours. The priests did not invent their own method; they followed His command. In the same way, believers are called to be faithful in the duties God gives them, trusting that He provides the means and the acceptance. The fire also symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s presence and purifying work. Just as the priests tended the flame, believers are to keep the fire of devotion alive, allowing the Spirit to sanctify them.

The order and precision of the ritual remind us that God values obedience and reverence. The continual fire speaks of His abiding presence among His people. As we consider Christ’s fulfillment of the sacrificial system, we are urged to offer our lives as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, through Him who loved us.
