Leviticus 13:58

And the garment, either warp, or woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean.

Leviticus 13:58 (KJV)

Leviticus 13 gives detailed laws about skin diseases and mildew in clothing or leather. These rules helped Israel stay physically and ritually clean. This verse is the final step for a garment that had mildew but now shows the plague has gone. The chapter closes in verse 59 by summarizing this as the law for determining when such items are clean or unclean.

The verse says that after the first washing and a waiting period, if the mildew has left the item, it must be washed a second time. Then it is clean. This second washing is not extra; it confirms that the defilement is truly gone. The item is fully restored and can be used again. The process requires careful examination, a first washing, and then a second washing to confirm the plague is truly gone. This illustrates that purification is not always a single event but can require a continued and complete process.

This careful process shows that purification often takes more than one step. In the New Testament, cleansing from sin also involves a complete work. For example, 1 John 1:9 teaches that when we confess our sins, God forgives and cleanses us. That cleansing is thorough and final, just as the second washing makes the garment clean. The detailed instructions in Leviticus point to God’s desire for complete removal of defilement and restoration of His people.

God cares about complete cleansing, not just a quick fix. In our lives, we may need repeated confession and repentance as we grow in holiness. The second washing reminds us that God does not leave us partly clean. He restores us fully when we turn to Him. This principle of ongoing cleansing moves us from a state of contamination to one of full restoration and acceptance.

This verse shows God’s desire to restore what was spoiled. He provides a clear path from uncleanness to cleanness. Through Jesus Christ, believers receive forgiveness and are made holy. We can trust that God’s work in us is complete, and we are called to live as people set apart for Him. The second washing is a picture of God’s thorough cleansing and His purposeful instructions for holiness.
